Rehabilitation after Fracture of the Ankle and Lower Leg in the Elderly
Lee Hong-Jae

Abstract
The prevalence of fracture in the elderly is increasing according to aging of our population. Loss of footing and fall-down, senile osteoporosis are the major risk factors of the fracture in the elderly. Fractures in the ankle and lower leg occur most frequently in the geriatric population. Those are caused by direct injury like a trauma or indirect injuries such as torsional and compressive force. For the management of fractures, various type of operation and followed immobilization for 6~8 weeks are inevitable, which results in a lot of complications such as joint stiffness, muscle atrophy and weakness even in the proximal muscles of affected limb, and abnormal gait pattern. In order to prevent these complications, a well organized rehabilitative program is essential; control of pain and inflammation, restoring range of motion of the involved joint, progressive strengthening, proprioceptive training, and final return to normal activities.
